Private or NHS?
We offer three treatment options to allow you to make an informed decision on the type of treatment you require.
NHS Treatment
-
Before seeing your child, we want you to know that NHS treatment may not be available if their health need does not fit the new NHS criteria. The initial examination by an orthodontist will be free of charge on the NHS, available on the receipt of a general dentist referral.
Those who qualify for NHS treatment will have their brace fitted at the first possible appointment, this will be determined by the current waiting list and availability based on the practices NHS contract with the local Primary Care Trust.
For NHS treatment, we use all metal braces and have limited appointment times that may occasionally mean your child taking time off school. If you would like to start treatment without the need to go on a waiting list or you feel aesthetic braces and more flexible appointment times are important to you, then please take a look at our independent or private treatment options, where we can operate outside the restrictions of the NHS system.
-
Your first appointment
One of our orthodontists will initially see you for an assessment to discuss the best treatment options available to you and your eligibility for NHS treatment. A screening x-ray may also be taken to assess your growth, development and the best time to start treatment.
Treatment
The brace will then be designed and fitted. Over the treatment time, you will have regular appointments to adjust your brace and gradually move your teeth into the correct position. Typically every 8-12 weeks, depending on the stages of treatment.
Removal and retention of your brace
Once your treatment is complete and your braces removed, you will be fitted for a retainer to help stabilise your teeth. This is to be worn as instructed but will usually be every night for the first six months, then as instructed, depending on check-up appointments.
Losing or damaging your appliance
You will be responsible for the care of your appliance or brace, and if lost or damaged, you will be charged £84.80 (subject to change) per appliance before treatment can be resumed. The NHS does not pay for the replacement or repair of your brace.
Emergencies
If you have any breakages or problems, please get in touch with us for help or to arrange an emergency appointment where you will be fitted in at the first available appointment.
For out-of-hours emergencies, please get in touch with wiltusb@gmail.com. This is for emergencies only where a patient is in pain and cannot wait for normal practice hours.
Independent Treatment
-
Due to NHS restrictions some patients can no longer be treated free of charge under the NHS system because their dental irregularity is not considered severe enough when compared to the IOTN guide set out by the Government (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needed).
For those patients who don’t qualify but still feel they would benefit from treatment, or for those under 16 years of age who wish to start their treatment without the need to join a waiting list, we offer a self funded option called "Independent Treatment" This option allows the patient to fund their own orthodontic treatment at a much lower cost than private treatment. The patient will receive the same metal brackets as used on NHS patients and appointment times will again mean attending during school hours.
Treatment can be started almost immediately and even small dental irregularities can be treated. If however the need for more aesthetic braces or more flexible appointment times is a requirement then please see our private treatment options.
Financing Available
To help you manage the cost of independent treatment we offer interest free payment terms with a deposit payable when the brace is first fitted and the balance then paid in equal monthly payments. We also offer a 5% discount for those who wish to pay in full at the start of their treatment. For more detailed information please contact the practice.

Private Treatment
-
Privately funded treatment offers the patient the widest choice of options. You can choose a treatment plan that most suits your lifestyle. Whether it is clear aligners or Damon fixed braces that work very quickly, with fewer appointments, or ceramic fixed braces that are almost invisible so people will hardly notice you have braces fitted.
Private patients also have more appointment times to choose from including early morning or later evenings so there is less need to take time off work or for children to miss school.
Cost & Financing
A primary Consultation with a specialist orthodontist to assess your requirements and explain what treatment options are available to you, along with the cost for each option.
An Extensive Consultation will allow the above, but with the addition of full x-rays and records being taken, a detailed treatment plan will be written, so you have a record of what has been discussed.
Financing
To help you manage the cost of private treatment, we off interest-free payment terms.
A deposit is payable when the brace is fitted, and the balance is paid by direct debit in equal instalments of £200 per month.
We also offer a 5% discount for those who wish to pay in full at the start of their treatment. For more detailed information, please get in touch with the practice.
